Celebrates 75 Years
of Sound Beach!
2004
marks the official 75th anniversary of the founding of Sound Beach
and the establishiment of the SBPOA
Join
us as we prepare for the big anniversary bash. The day will start
at 12 noon, with a ceremony commemorating 75 years of Sound Beach.
From 12:30 to 4:00, local merchants and vendors will offer adults
a chance to sample what Sound Beach and friends have to offer. Food,
specially designed t-shirts, calendars with historic pictures. Children
will play in the 'Castle Bounce', will create 'Spin Art',
and will try their skill at the gorilla toss. At 3:30, The
Design-A-Sign Contest will be judged, and monetary prizes awarded
in all categories:
- Children's
(under 12),
- Best
Name (family, house or combination),
- Most
Creative,
- Best
Overall and Honorable Mention.
Start
your project now! Join in the fun by designing a sign, which expresses
your family's name, your house name or your love of Sound Beach. Noted
members of the community will judge the signs and the winners will
receive monetary and special prizes. You must register to participate
in the contest. Registration for the children's category is $1.00:
all others, $5.00. Fill
out the registration form (PDF), and
send it to us by June 21, 2004.
When
Sound Beach was first developed, names or signs identified homes.
This contest is reminiscent of the original Sound Beach community.
You can use any material and it can be any size. All winners will
have pictures of their signs published. These photos will also appear
on the SBPOA web page.
We are
also gathering artifacts for a time capsule that we plan to
bury under the bricks designed by you to be opened in the future!
If you have any items, like old cloth beach tags, window tags used
for garbage pick-up, or shell ashtrays you made as a kid, please let
us know.
We are
also creating an 'historic corner' in the clubhouse. If you
have old pictures, newspapers or other items of interest from the
1930's to the present, which you would like to lend to us, please
contact Florence McArdle, one of the members of our nascent historical
society, via email at byossis@earthlink.net.
She will make arrangements with you to copy your photos and return
the originals immediately.
Starting
at 6:00, we will have a Thank You Party for the Volunteers
(everyone is invited to bring a dish to share) and we will end the
day with the wonderful sounds of Jerry Costanza's Quartet. Join us
for the fun!
We also
plan to publish a commemorative journal in honor of this special
anniversary. Click here for the journal
registration form (PDF) .
