Sound Beach, New York
The Past - The Present - The Future

Sound Beach - The Future

Today many of the bungalows are gone. The tiny parcels have new modern homes with the latest conveniences. Few open expanses of land remain. The ten-year-old Sound Beach Civic Association has worked very hard to find a park in Sound Beach. They are now attempting to have the Town of Brookhaven purchase property on the cliff, which has been slated for homes and turn the land into a preserve. The S.B.P.O.A. supports this effort.

The cliffs that overlook our north shore are eroding at an alarming rate. Shore Drive which once spanned most of the area along the coast, has lost many sections to erosion. Our access stairs are constantly threatened by this and chronic vandalism. Our effort to preserve these stairs and beaches is a demanding chore. Only through membership and volunteerism can we be successful in attaining some semblance of what we once enjoyed in the past. And more importantly, what we will pass on to future generations of Sound Beach residents. If you are interested in helping to preserve our community, join us or contact us today.

Sound Beach and the beautiful Long Island Sound are still here, as it has been from eternity and will be until eternity. We are all fortunate to be part of it.

Spring, 2001

(The writer of this article, Eileen Lavin Cantwell, obtained much of her material from old newspapers. However, the majority of it came from the memories of people she met over the years - including her father, whose first Sound Beach tax bill was $1.00!)
