Memoirs
of Jim Hodges Does anybody remember the Blue Goose? It was a sign at the corner of Rocky Point road and Valley Drive that was used as a local landmark. Since there were no street numbers in those days it was hard to find a particular house. At a prominent intersection people used to nail a board with an arrow and their name on it to a tree. There seemed to be dozens of these signs nailed to every tree at every intersection in Sound Beach. You turned left (or right)at the Blue Goose and followed the signs to get to someone's house. My friend Harvey Saffron also has some good stories to tell. He lived down by Dawn's Pass and in back of his house it was all forest. There were horse trails through the woods and you could ride for miles without seeing a house. Harve used to love to go horseback riding and dragged me along with him. I hated it. We used to rent horses at Eileen's stable. Eileen was right up there with Sunny as far as 10 year old boy's fantasies were concerned. When I was 10 or so I fell off a horse and they thought the horse stepped on my face. You know how they tell you to get back on a horse after you have been thrown or you will be afraid of horses afterward? Well I got back on the horse right after I was thrown. Guess what? I've been terrified of horses ever since so I think that advice is a lot of beans. While
on the subject of horses, Germaine can tell you this story: She was
sleeping once in our back yard in the hammock and woke up to see a
horse staring at her. A friend of hers was on a horseback ride and
decided to visit. I don't think people realize nowadays how much forest |
